Daniel McKenna divided his time on Sunday between cramming for his Leaving Cert and setting fastest times on Run 1 &Run 2 but he was only 4th fastest on Run 3 in his Gowna Transport 1600cc Mk2 Escort and had to settle for 2nd overall. Thomas McGovern brought his AMG Facades Mk2 Escort back to Hut Cross for the first time since he upgraded his 2.0Ltr 16valve Vauxhall engine and he put it to effective use with second fastest time on the last run and a class win in class 5.

The hut cross track was once again in superb condition for the 4th round of the V-MAC series with the only problem being dust rising from the gravel sections of the track after the recent dry weather. Due to the rotation system in use this year, class 4 cars were first on track and it was the Enda Conaty backed Mk2 Escort of Joe Smith that set the pace on the first run with eventual class winner James Cassidy second fastest with Mervyn Wedlock third in a hired Mk2 Escort. James Cassidy stepped up the pace on the second run to record fastest time with Mervyn Wedlock also improving to second fastest, Joe Smith’s progress was hampered by what was later diagnosed as a “splutter” in his Mk2 Escort and recorded third fastest time. James was fastest yet again on the third run to win the class and take 4th overall, former Northern Ireland Stages Champion Stephen Harron brought Colm McGuiness’s pristine Mk2 escort into second fastest on the third run to secure third in class and 9th overall. Mervyn Wedlock was fractionally slower than Harron on the third run but was secure in second in class and 7th overall.

Dessie Tierney posted fastest times in class 5 all day but when he ascended to overall victory the class win was collected by Thomas McGovern with Robert Moffett second in his awesome Escort 6R4. Moffett had been consistently second fastest in the class over the first two runs, but his pace slipped on the last run allowing McGovern to capitalise on his turn of speed. Reigning V-MAC Champion Ronnie Coulter netted third with a consistent run in his Talbot Sunbeam. In Overall terms Thomas McGovern was third, Robert Moffett ended up sixth and Ronnie came in eight.

The battle for Class 3 honours became a family affair as Colm McBride and his brother Adrian traded times in their Peugeot 106 Gti, Adrian was the faster of the two throughout the day but a fastest time by Colm on the last run secured the class win for him. Mark Wedlock made his way progressively through the class field in a hired Mk2 Escort during the day and third fastest on the last run secured third in class for him.

In Class 2 Daniel McKenna established a healthy advantage over the rest of the class contenders from the outset, his Gowna Transport Escort was 3 seconds clear of the Nova of Danny McCormick on both the first and second run. On the third run McCormick did close the gap but even then McKenna had a cushion of over a second. Third final podium position in class 2 went to the Starlet of Shane McGirr, he was consistently third fastest except for the second run where Darrel Harron pipped him for third fastest by 0.14 of a second sharing the same car.

In class 1 February event winner Michael Conlon returned with his Rallycross Mini to dominate the class with fastest time on each run. The Foamula 1 Nova of Gerard Greene was the only driver to challenge Conlon being second fastest on each run, while third place went to reigning Club champion Pat Higgins double driving Tommy Donlon’s Citroen AX. The V-MAC Silos Autocross Championship takes its traditional mid season break until October, last Sundays event was brought forward from July to accommodate the running of the Monaghan Forest Rally on July 3rd
