HUNTER CATCHES CARLOW

Posted: June 27, 2017 6:39 AM

The Seven Oaks Hotel Carlow Rally, round three of the Dunlop National Rally Championship, was won by Welshman Hugh Hunter and his co-driver Andy Marchbank (Subaru WRC), who fended off the challenge of Melvyn Evans/Mark Glennerster (Subaru WRC) to win by 5.6 seconds. Roy White/James O’Brien (MG ZR) were third. Paddy McVeigh/Gary McElhinney (Subaru WRC) netted fourth to move into the lead of the Dunlop series. The Dunlop “Drive of the Day” was won by Frank Kelly/Liam Brennan (Ford Escort), they were down in fifteenth after the opening stage but recovered to finish eighth overall.

White was quickest on the opening stage albeit by 0.9 of a second with Hunter second and Evans a further 7.8 seconds behind having stalled his Subaru WRC at the start line. Hunter and Evans set equal fastest times on the second stage with Hunter quickest on the third stage to move into a lead of 11.9 seconds with Evans second. White occupied third a further 10.1 seconds behind as all the drivers remarked on the slippery nature of the stages. O’Brien held fourth with Wesley Patterson (Ford Escort) the top two wheel drive competitor in fifth place.

Sixth placed Steve Wood (Subaru WRC) reckoned he was lacking in confidence while Paddy McVeigh (Subaru WRC) one place behind had a major moment on the second stage that sapped his confidence. Kevin Barrett (Subaru WRC) had a moment on the opening stage and backed off on the final pair of stages of the opening loop. The Escorts of Sam Smyth and Vivian Hamill completed the top ten. Daniel Barry (Mitsubishi) lost time on the third stage when he was off the road briefly. Frank Kelly (Escort), fifteenth after the opening stage, had steering issues and was down in twelfth position while David Condell (Escort), who was eleventh on the opening stage, lost some two and a half minutes when the alternator broke on the third stage.

On the fourth stage leader Hunter lost some fifteen seconds when he spun his Subaru and Evans closed to within 1.2 seconds. However, Hunter was quickest through the remaining two stages and arrived at the Carlow service park with a lead of 7.4 seconds. Evans in second reckoned he had chosen a tyre compound that was far too soft and they were very worn at the stage finish. Meanwhile, White was quickest through Stage 4 despite a huge moment where he admitted he was lucky to survive.

McVeigh lost the intercom on the fifth stage but sorted the problem for the sixth stage as he moved into fourth ahead of Wood with O’Brien, who stalled on S.S. 6, sixth.

Patterson continued to lead the Modified category as Kelly, with the steering issues sorted moved into eighth 53.2 seconds behind his rival. For the third Dunlop round in a row Kevin Barrett retired his Subaru WRC, on this occasion a broken front driveshaft brought an end to his rally on S.S. 5.

Vivian Hamill (Escort) and Daniel Barry (Mitsubishi EvoX) completed the top ten, the latter broke a rear suspension arm. Elsewhere, Sam Smyth’s rally ended on S.S. 5 when he slid his Escort off the road.

The battle intensified as Evans, having changed the tyres and brakes at the service park, cut Hunter’s lead to a mere 0.4 of a second on the seventh stage. However, Hunter repelled his fellow Welshman and with a pair of fastest stage times took a 5.6 second victory. White’s MG lapsed on to three cylinders on the penultimate stage but he held on to secure third from McVeigh, who took sixteen Dunlop points to move into the lead of the series. O’Brien and Wood completed the top six.

Lisburn’s Wesley Patterson (Escort) won the Modified category with Frank Kelly second – 41.7 seconds behind in a top ten that was completed by Vivian Hamill (Escort) and Daniel Barry (Mitsubsuhi).

The Group N category was won by Shane Maguire (Mitsubishi). The Roscommon crew of Cormac Phelan/Katja Auhl (Honda Civic) won the Junior category and the Historic section was won by John Reid/Enda Shiels (Ford Escort)

James Stafford (Darrian T90) and Tommy Doyle were non-starters.

CARLOW CALLING Preview courtesy of Dunlop – proud sponsors of the Irish National Rally Championship

Posted: May 9, 2014 1:00 PM

THE Dunlop National Rally Championship continues on Sunday next in Carlow where last year’s winner in Carlow, James Stafford (Darrian T90) heads the entry for the nine stage rally as the hosts, the Carlow Car Club, mark a return to the county town and its headquarters at the Seven Oaks Hotel.

On the last round, the Circuit of Kerry, the Wexford driver held third overall until he retired on the final loop of stages. As always, weather conditions will be key to his progress and he will be hoping for a dry environment so as his nimble Darrian can keep pace with the all-powerful four wheel drive cars of his rivals.

Dunlop National Rally champion and leader of the current campaign Declan Boyle has been forced to skip the event, he crashed out of the lead of the Killarney based Cartell.ie Rally of the Lakes on Sunday last and his Subaru WRC will not be ready in time to allow him to participate in Carlow, he will renew his bid to retain the Vard Memorial Trophy on the Rathkeale based Circuit of Munster on the first Sunday in June.

Meanwhile, Welsh driver Hugh Hunter (Subaru WRC) took his first batch of Dunlop points when he finished runner-up in Tralee and needs to continue that form in Carlow to sustain his championship challenge. Another Welsh driver, Melvyn Evans, who won the Dunlop National Rally Championship title in 2011, makes his debut in the current series.

Consistency has been the key for Tyrone’s Paddy McVeigh (Subaru WRC), who is currently second in the series – ten points behind Boyle - he will occupy the number five berth in Carlow.

The top ten also includes Roy White O'Brien (MG ZR), the Clonmel driver began the season on a high note with second spot in Ballina but problems on the Circuit of Kerry dropped him well down the final classification.

Another Dunlop regular Kevin Barrett (Subaru WRC) will be hoping for his first finish of the current Dunlop season after transmission woes forced him out of both of the opening rounds. Meanwhile, British driver Steve Wood (Subaru WRC), who is seeded at number eight has racked up points from both events and is presently third overall in the series.

The top ten also features reigning Irish National Forest rally champion, London based Cork driver Michael O'Brien (Ford Focus WRC) and Longford’s Tommy Doyle, who has yet to decide whether to drive his usual Renault Clio R3 or a Hyundai Accent WRC. Wicklow’s Daniel Barry (Mitsubishi Evo IX) is a late entry.

Former winner of the Dunlop Mk. 2 Challenge Trophy, Frank Kelly heads a plethora of Ford Escorts. The Tyrone ace faces opposition from Wesley Patterson, Sam Smyth, David Condell, Fergus O'Meara, Ed O'Callaghan, Trevor Culbert, Vivian Hamill and Enda McNulty, who complete the top twenty. The rally marks the tenth anniversary of the Carlow Car Club’s Mk. 2 Challenge. Kelly won that category last year finishing 13 seconds ahead of Garryhill’s Sam Smith with Trevor Culbert five seconds further behind.

Elsewhere, Brendan McDaid, also in a Ford Escort, Eddie Power (Toyota Corolla WRC), Mark Straker (Darrian T90), George Condell (Toyota Starlet), Ian Gunning, Michael Curran, James Coleman, Wayne Evans and Joe Connolly, all in Ford Escorts and Lloyd Hutchinson (Mini Cooper) are all part of the 140 plus entry list.

Clare’s Niall O'Sullivan (Citroen C2) heads the entry in the Junior category.

The loop of three stages at Ballyhide, Killeen and Sleaty in County Laois - just over the Carlow county border will be repeated three times with the service park at the Carlow Institute of Technology. Headquarters is at the Seven Oaks Hotel, Carlow.
