Rallycross Double Header Set To Thrill At Mondello Park!

Posted: October 1, 2019 3:09 PM

Mondello Park is where Rallycross first started in Ireland and remains the spiritual home of the popular discipline today. The PartsForCars.ie backed Irish Rallycross Championship returns to the Kildare venue for an exciting doubleheader on October the 19/20th of October.

With the championship season almost at an end, one would reasonably expect the various class titles to be decided but in most cases, nothing could be further from the truth. Irish Rallycross star Derek Tohill has dominated when he appeared, but with his British title challenge being his main concern, he finds himself an unaccustomed third in the Supercar standings. Noel Greene is generally Tohill's closest challenger and it is he who leads the class, with young Darragh Morris in second, just seven points behind. To keep his title hopes alive, Tohill realistically needs to win both days, so he won't be in a compromising mood!

Former overall champion Willie Coyne leads the modified class, just ahead of his brother Michael, but Peter McGarry is just a few points behind, despite only scoring at two of the three-round held so far. Once again here, a double win from McGarry could vault him right into championship contention- don't bet against it!

The Buggy class is similarly close with Russell Woods just holding off Padraic McHale and Pa Bellew. As ever though, any of them could take a win when the screaming machines take to the track.

Retro Rallycross made a hugely popular debut at the last round with Barry McArdle taking the honours after some fantastic scraps all day with Pa Ryan in the Corsa. They were joined by an iconic Mk2 Escort driven by Peter Faulkner and Seamus Hobbs' spaceframe Metro to being rallycross fans right back to the 80s!

Reigning Fiesta champion David Maher is unbeaten this season in the budget saloon class, but as ever, Oisin Keane, Denis McCrudden and a few others will be hoping to end his winning streak. They will be joined by marshal turned circuit racer Ruth Nugent, who makes her rallycross debut at the event.

They say if the Junior section is busy, then the future for any sport is bright. If that is the case, Rallycross is looking good. Twelve drivers have scored points thus far in the championship and the racing has been second to none there are several future stars in their midst. Jack Byrne leads the title chase from Loughlin Farrell but Brendan McCaughan has won on both of his appearances so far this year and will surely be aiming for same again this time around. Whatever happens, we can be sure the Junior Finals will be action-packed as ever!

The event will also hold the finals from round one of the championship which were curtailed due to snow. These will take place first thing on Saturday the 19th of October, so it will be a weekend of non stop action in Mondello Park!
