Defending Dunlop National Rally champions Declan Boyle/Brian Boyle (Subaru WRC) took a start to finish victory in the Ballinasloe based Carlton Shearwater Hotel Galway Summer Rally, round six of the Dunlop series to maintain their back to back title aspirations. At the end of the nine stage event they were 57.6 seconds in front of the Subaru WRC of Welsh ace Hugh Hunter and his co-driver Andy Marchbank.

Clonmel’s Roy White (MG ZR) and his Cork co-driver James O’Brien were third followed by Welsh driver Steve Wood (Subaru WRC) and his Limerick co-driver Keith Moriarty. All four drivers along with Tyrone’s Paddy McVeigh (Subaru WRC), who failed to finish in Ballinasloe, remain in the title hunt for the Vard Memorial Trophy, the two remaining rounds are the Clare Rally and the Donegal Harvest Rally.

Meanwhile, the Group N category was won by Monaghan’s Josh Moffett/John Rowan and Kerry’s PJ O'Dowd/John Young (Talbot Sunbeam) took the laurels in the Historic section. On the opening stage near Aughrim, Boyle set the pace and led Hunter by 4.8 seconds with Roy White (MG ZR) best of the rest in third – 10.2 seconds further behind. Derek McGarrity retired his Mini WRC due to oil pump failure less than half way through the stage.

Completing the three stage loop with a string of fastest times, Boyle arrived at the Ballinasloe service park with a lead of 28.3 seconds over Hunter, who lost time at the start of S.S. 2 when he had problems with the launch control. Indeed, the episode seemed to fluster the Welshman and he admitted he took time to regain his composure.

Even though he was stymied by a loss of power that was related to a turbo issue, Wood slotted into third some 24 seconds further behind but just a fraction of a second ahead of the MG ZR of Roy White, who was untroubled.

Josh Moffett in fifth held control of the Group N category – he was some 45 seconds in front of Stephen McCann with Shane Maguire twelve seconds further behind.

Meanwhile, Kevin Barrett and Paddy McVeigh were next in classification, the former had brake troubles and the latter was concerned about the transmission. The top ten was completed by the Escorts of Jonathan Pringle, who was just 1.3 seconds ahead of Frank Kelly, Galway’s Tom Curley (Subaru WRC) was tenth.

Admitting to setting a fast pace Boyle dominated the second loop and duly extended his advantage over Hunter to 57.9 seconds, the latter dropped time with fuel pump problems, switching pumps failed to sort the problem. White regained third at the expense of Wood, who continued to have the power issue.

Having sorted the brake problems Kevin Barrett (Subaru WRC) improved his performance, he held fifth as Josh Moffett arrived into service with a broken exhaust manifold that occurred on the fifth stage.

Paddy McVeigh (Subaru WRC) retired after the fourth stage with transmission woes while Jonathan Pringle was forced to retire when he damaged the steering of his Ford Escort following an altercation with a chicane bale.

Frank Kelly took up the mantle as leader of the two wheel drive category, however, his Escort sustained a broken halfshaft close to the finish of the sixth stage. Pat Donegan (Escort) in eighth place was his closest rival and was some 34 seconds behind as he gave a much better performance through the second loop.

Seeded at No. 72, Limerick driver Sean Liston (BMW E30) was up into ninth place, he had overheating troubles on the second stage and broke a suspension mount on the fourth stage. Russell Woods (Ford Escort) completed the top ten.

Elsewhere, Shane Maguire was eleventh in general classification and second in Group N. Kerry’s Mike Quinn (Ford Escort) occupied twelfth ahead of top Galway driver, Neil Pierce (Honda Civic), he was 11.7 seconds ahead of another Galwegian, David Quigley, also in a Honda Civic. Tom Curley (Subaru WRC) and Pat Kelly (Subaru) both retired during the second loop.

Boyle went on to record his third win of the Dunlop series with Hunter and White completing the top three. Wood was fourth in a top six that also included Kevin Barrett and Group N winner Josh Moffett. Frank Kelly (Ford Escort) won the Modified section ahead of Pat Donegan (Escort).

The Dunlop “Drive of the Day” was won by the Limerick crew of Sean Liston/Katrina Walsh-Liston (BMW E30), who were eleventh overall, they had a misfire on the seventh stage. Neil Pierce (Honda Civic) won the Ger Conway Trophy for the highest placed Galway driver, he finished 13th. overall and first in Class 11F.

FIVE drivers can still win the Dunlop National Rally Championship that continues on Sunday next with the Carlton Shearwater Hotel Galway Summer Rally in Ballinasloe. The nine stage rally, round six of the campaign will play a pivotal role in the destiny of the magnificent Vard Memorial Trophy. The Galway organisers have attracted a capacity entry along with a reserve list that highlights the popularity of the Dunlop series that is based on the best six scores from eight events.

Top seed and last year’s winner in Galway, Welsh ace Hugh Hunter (Subaru) is one of the Dunlop title chasing quintet, he has already dropped two rounds and must score significant points in Ballinasloe to remain in contention.

It is a similar situation for defending Dunlop champion, Declan Boyle (Subaru WRC), who retired whilst leading the last round in Clonmel. The Donegal driver can, provided he takes maximum points in county Galway and the events in Clare and Donegal, reach the 100 points tally and possibly win the title on what would be the lowest points total in the history of the Dunlop series. Of course there are numerous permutations at this point but it is likely that the title hopes of possibly one of the five will end on Sunday.

Tyrone’s Paddy McVeigh had his first non-finish of the season in Clonmel last time out and has lost the lead of the series to Welshman Steve Wood, they are seeded at three and four respectively, Wood claimed second placed points in Clonmel. Of the title chasing quintet, Clonmel’s Roy White could actually finish with a points total of 109, however, he is very much aware that this is not realistic and he has admitted he will be quite content to secure another top three finish in the series against the more powerful WRC brigade.

Antrim’s Derek McGarrity will compete in a Mini Cooper WRC, he was a regular in the Dunlop series a few years ago and it will be interesting to see how he will fare, like Darragh O’Riordan in the last round, McGarrity will run his car in Class 20. That last Dunlop round in Clonmel provided Kevin Barrett (Subaru WRC) with his best finish of the current season, the Maynooth driver is a former winner of this event.

Although the top ten also includes Alan Ring in the Mel Evans hired S12B Subaru WRC, the Castleisland driver has withdrawn as the Subaru WRC will not be repaired in time following his exit in Clonmel.

Wexford’s James Stafford took maximum points in Clonmel and is still involved in the rally.ie award – for the top two wheel drive in overall classification, currently he trails Frank Kelly by 15 points, he could also play a key role in splitting the Dunlop contenders. Reigning Irish Forest champion Michael O'Brien (Ford Focus WRC) completes the top ten as he builds up to a full attack on next season’s series.

In Group N, Josh Moffett (Mitsubishi), who missed the last round but still heads the classification for the Motorsport Safety Group N award occupies the number eleven berth. Opposition in Galway includes Shane Maguire, who cut the deficit to seven points and former leader Neil Tohill. Pat Kirk, Stephen McCann, Rob Duggan, Daniel Cronin and Gus Kearney, all in Mitsubishi’s are also on the entry.

Meanwhile, the entertaining Frank Kelly, a winner of the Dunlop Mk. 2 Challenge heads a plethora of Ford Escorts. His rival in the Dunlop series, Viv Hamill along with Pat Donegan, Jonathan Pringle, who won the title last year, Gary Kiernan, Ed O'Callaghan, Tom Flaherty, Mike Quinn, Michael Curran, Martin McGee, Jim McKenna and Ed Synan provide fascinating opposition.

The top Galway driver amongst the capacity entry is Tom Curley (Subaru WRC) others such as Pat Kelly (Subaru), Tom Flaherty (Ford Escort), Neil Pierce (Honda Civic), David Quigley (Honda Civic), Maurice Greaney (Mitsubishi) Paul Curley (Subaru), Kenneth Hogan (Mitsubishi) and Richard Whelan (Honda Civic) will endeavour to impress on home ground.

Meanwhile, in the Dunlop Junior Championship just four points cover the top three drivers - Clare’s Niall O'Sullivan (Citroen C2), Roscommon’s Cormac Phelan (Citroen C2 R2) and Cavan’s Damian O'Reilly all of whom are competing on Sunday.

The Dunlop Historic Championship has been won by the Kerry crew of Kerry’s PJ O’Dowd/John Young (Talbot Sunbeam).

Entry List is oversubscribed for the weekend’s Galway Summer Rally!

Galway Motor Club is delighted to confirm that there have been in excess of 140 teams entered for next weekend’s big Carlton Shearwater Hotel Galway Summer Rally. The competing teams, their sponsors and crews, and the hundreds of spectators that will line the route will bring a welcome late season boost to tourism and visitor numbers to Galway city and county over the weekend. The event is Round 5 of the Dunlop National Championship of Ireland and Round 4 of the Top Part West Coast Rally Championship.

The place to be on Saturday 30th August is Ballinasloe. The rally will start with afternoon scrutineering of cars at the Headquarters, the Carlton Shearwater Hotel, from 2pm. There follows a Ceremonial Start at 7.30pm for the top seeded cars and local drivers. These are ideal opportunities to see the rally cars and drivers up close prior to the start of the competition. Entertainment continues with a Barbeque and Tractor Build event at 9.00pm that evening in The Carlton Shearwater Hotel

Traffic Diversions:

In order to facilitate the safe running of the event there will be temporary Road Closures on certain roads in East county Galway on Sunday 31st August. All will be clearly sign posted and marshalled. All residents affected have been informed of the times and arrangements and the details have been advertised by Galway County Council.

Nominated Galway Charity:

The organisers have chosen the Galway Parkinson’s Association as its charity partner. The charity’s volunteers will be promoting awareness at various locations along the route and all support will be much appreciated by them.

Leading Entries :

The entries have been seeded by the organisers and the rally winner is likely to come from one of the top 10 seeds. The number 1 seed will be reserved for last year’s winner, Hugh Hunter from Wales in his Subaru WRC. He will be co driven by Andy Marchbank. Other top seeds in similar Subaru World Rally cars are current Dunlop National Champions, the Donegal cousins, Declan and Brian Boyle, Steve Wood (Wales), Paddy Mc Veigh (Dungannon), Kevin Barrett (Maynooth), and Alan Ring (Kerry). Driving a Ford Focus WRC will be the current Irish Forestry Rally Champion, Michael O Brien, (Cork), while former National Champion, Peadar Hurson from Newry will drive an Escort WRC. Roy White from Clonmel will be driving the unique MG ZR, also capable of taking a win, while the leading Group N car is that of Monaghan’s Josh Moffett.

There are a total of 10 crews from outside of Ireland taking part in this year’s event, some travelling from Australia, USA and Canada, others from London, Wales and other parts of the UK.

Leading Local Entries:

Members of Galway Motor Club taking part in the event will be seeking to put their name on the Conroy Cup. This cup has been presented annually for the past 25 years to the highest placed Galway Motor Club crew. Winners in 2013 were Eamon Dervan from Loughrea, co driven by Brian Mc Namara, in his Escort Mk2, who will be seeking to retain the cup in 2014. The other leading Galway drivers will include:

The event will also include an Escort Mk2 Challenge, sponsored by Galway company GRP4 Fabrications. Apart from the local Escort drivers, a great battle is expected between Cavan drivers, Russell Woods, Gary Kiernan, and Jonathan Pringle, Mike Quinn from Clare, Ed O Callaghan from Limerick, Meath’s Pat Donegan and Donegal’s Martin McGee.

Route :

The rally route on Sunday August 31st will cover 9 closed road stages in east Galway. The rally Service Park will be in Ballinasloe Mart, by kind permission of the Mart Committee. The cars will visit the service park on three occasions during the day for checks, tyre changes etc. Sunday evening will see the Ceremonial Finish at the Carlton Shearwater Hotel at approximately 5.00pm. Admission to all events on Sunday is free.

Galway Motor Club gears up for big 40th Summer Rally.

At the recent rally launch, Ollie Turner, Galway Bay FM, Garrett Mc Guiness, Manager Carlton Clearwater Hotel, Ballinasloe,
Mark Parsons, President Galway Motor Club, and Donal Scannell, President Ballinasloe Chamber of Commerce.

Preparations are well advanced for the Galway Summer Stages Rally which takes place over the weekend of 30th and 31st August next. The event is sponsored by the Carlton Shearwater Hotel in Ballinasloe and is supported by the Ballinasloe Traders. As Round 6 of the Dunlop National Championship, and Round 4 of the Top Part West Coast Championship, a full entry of 130 of Irelands top line rally drivers will take part.

The Clerk of the Course is Mark Parsons, Galway Motor Club President, an experienced organiser and rally competitor. The 2014 event will return to a full weekend format with Scrutiny, Ceremonial Start and entertainment on Saturday 30th August at the Rally Headquarters, The Carlton Shearwater Hotel in Ballinasloe. The Sunday route will then cover 9 special stages in the East Galway area. Official Rally Programmes with full time schedules and detailed maps and full entry lists will be available in the week before the event.

The rally format will bring a welcome boost to visitor numbers to Galway County. The event generates a requirement for approximately 1000 bed nights in the area over the weekend.

Mark Parsons, Clerk of the Course, said
“Galway Motor Club is indebted to the staff of Galway County Council, An Garda Siochana, Failte Ireland, the Road Safety Authority, our sponsors, the 300 volunteer marshals from all over Ireland, and most of all the residents along the route for their assistance with temporary road closures to ensure the safe running of the event.”

The Galway Summer Stages Rally is an event that is sanctioned by the FIA under an official Permit issued by Motorsport Ireland, and supported by the RSA – The Road Safety Authority of Ireland. The ‘Keep the Race in its Place’ campaign is extremely successful in talking to predominantly young people who follow motorsport. The Galway Motor Club is eager to remind everyone of the need to drive safely at all times – hence the message “Keep the Race in its Place’’. All competing cars will carry this logo and message. A comprehensive traffic management plan has been put in place with the support of the Gardai.

The 2013 Galway Summer Rally was a great success. Two crews from Wales finished in the top two places, both driving Subaru World Rally Cars. Hugh Hunter was the clear winner, with James Belton in second place. Cork driver Daragh O Riordan finished a close third in his Fiesta WRC. The first Galway Summer Rally took place 40 years ago, in 1974, and the winning driver was Sean Campbell from Newry in his Escort RS.

The Galway Summer Rally attracts a large entry from Galway Motor Club members, all vying for the prestigious Conroy Cup. The cup has been presently annually since 1989 to the highest placed car crewed by club members. Current holder of the cup is Eamon Dervan from Loughrea, who was navigated by Brian Mc Namara when winning the cup in his Mk2 Escort in 2013.

Galway Motor Club, organisers of the Galway Summer Rally, are delighted to announce that The Carlton Shearwater Hotel, Ballinasloe in association with Ballinasloe Town will be again be the title sponsors of the 2014 Galway Summer Stages Rally.
