EMMA’S CAREER BEST AT SHACKLETON

Posted: July 24, 2008 9:35 AM

Maiden City Motor Club’s flagship charity motorsport event at Shackleton airfield Ballykelly saw Banbridge driver Emma Mckinstry notch up her best result in her rallying career to date in her Subaru Impreza WRC.

With five stages around the airfield and with a high quality entry including multiple champions Kenny Mckinstry and Kevin Lynch, there was no time for crews to ease themselves in. Emma stepped up to the mark setting sixth fastest time on the opening stage, while Emma’s father took an early lead from Kevin Lynch.

The dry fast conditions seemed to suit Emma as she continued to set competitive times, coming within seconds of rally leader Kenny Mckinstry. A spin from Seamus Leonard would promote Emma and co-driver Kenny Hull to fifth place on the penultimate stage.

Emma and Kenny were delighted with their progress and continued to push. Indeed going into the last stage they were left with no option but to keep the pressure on, with Richard Hogg a mere three seconds in front and Alan Carmichael and Derek McGeehan tied for sixth place behind Emma it was all to play for. Emma had a clean run through the last stage to finish up 5th overall, a career best, while father Kenny took the overall honours in first place.

Thanks to sponsors Triton Showers, Hankook Tyres, McGaffin Contracts, IDGNI and Sunoco Race Fuels for their continued support, next event for the Mckinstry motorsport team: The Dogleap Rally, 2nd August will see Emma and Kenny return to forest rallying.

The Shackleton Charity Festival has engaged launch control and is on the start line of what has become the biggest Motorsport Festival in Ireland. Along with all the motorsport events there will be lots for all the family including Cullens Fun Fair, Classic Car and Vintage Displays, helicopter rides, face painters, puppet shows, Magicians, Trade Stands, Flying Simulator, Music & Entertainment. The weekend kicks off with a Motorsport Forum on Friday 19th at 7.00pm. Various motorsport stars will be in attendance including Jeremy McWilliams, Colin Turkington, Kevin Lynch and Petter Solberg / Phil Mills from the Subaru World Rally Team. The evening will be a light hearted affair with DVD’s and a question & answer session. At the end of the evening there will be a charity auction with items ranging from a golfing weekend for two at the Forest of Arden course, weekend breaks, a helicopter trip to the Ulster Rally and Petter Solberg’s rally suit plus much more.

Saturday morning 9.00am see’s the motorsport kick off with the Short Circuit Championship hosted by Coleraine and District Motor Club.
