The hills above East Belfast most certainly were alive on Saturday when the Ulster Automobile Clubs Leisure Services Craigantlet Hill-Climb hosted rounds of both the Nicholson McLaren British and Millers Oils ANICC hill-climb championships.

Spectators enjoyed the mostly dry weather and were thrilled by the huge variety of cars, everything from the vintage machines, one of which competed on the Craigantlet Hill-Climb 58 years ago, right up to the hugely impressive single seaters filled with up-to-date technology.

Sam Matthewson from Downpatrick based Leisure Services led the 75 strong entry up 'the hill' in his newly acquired GT4 Celica then sat back and watched as the action unfolded.

British Championship leader Scott Moran recorded the fastest time of the day (39.89) in his Gould GR61X, however it was his father Roger Moran driving the same car who took glory on both British Championship rounds.

The quickest Northern Ireland competitor was Muckamore man Graham Thompson who recorded 9th fastest time of the day (44.68) in his GTR Turbo.

The Ulster Automobile Club’s Craigantlet Hill-Climb takes place, as usual, on the first Saturday in August (6th) at Craigantlet on the outskirts of East Belfast and we are delighted to welcome 'Leisure Services' as title sponsor for the 2011 event.

Leisure Services is a local business based in Downpatrick, County Down and offers a wide range of caravan and motorhome repairs and servicing, as well as caravan disposal throughout Ireland.

Craigantlet Hill-Climb is a round of both the Millers Oils ANICC Hill-Climb Championship as well as the Nicholson McLaren MSA British Hill-Climb Championship and with over 70 entries has attracted a fantastic range of machinery. This event can offer you everything from carefully prepared and immaculately turned out saloon cars, sports cars, specials and vintage cars to the British Championship contenders in their big single seater racing cars bristling with the latest technology.

Action kicks off at 10.00am with the first of two practice runs, and the competition proper starts in the afternoon at 1.30pm.

To give you some idea of how fast these guys are, last year’s winner averaged just over 72mph for the 0.8 miles from a standing start, going through the speed trap at 118mph. Not impressed? Then you need to come and see how tight and twisty this road is!!

So if you're still wondering what to do on Saturday 6th August and fancy a noisy, action packed FREE day out (with or without the kids), then why not come along to the 'Leisure Services Craigantlet Hill-Climb and see this spectacular machinery in action?!! You’ll get the chance to see some incredible driving from the top UK and Irish drivers and get up close and personal with an amazing array of machinery!
