Rally Programme offers VIP Barbados Trip

Posted: April 13, 2013 8:00 AM

One lucky spectator at the inaugural London Rally for Heroes next weekend (April 19/20) will win a VIP trip for two to Sol Rally Barbados 2013 (June 1/2), the Caribbean’s biggest annual motor sport International. With Rally HQ at the Brooklands Museum, the first major rally to be staged so close to London for nearly 20 years is raising funds in support of Help for Heroes and the organiser, the Southern Car Club, anticipates a major spectator turn-out.

The prize includes return flights from London Gatwick to Barbados and a seven-night stay at the Waves Resort and Spa, compliments of the Barbados Tourism Authority (BTA) and Virgin Holidays, with VIP hospitality on the rally’s opening day, courtesy of the Barbados Rally Club (BRC).

There is a lucky number printed in every copy of the Official Souvenir Programme, which goes on sale at outlets in and around Brooklands on Saturday (April 13). Programmes will also be on sale during the event at the spectator stages at Rushmoor Arena, Aldershot, on Saturday, April 20, as well as at Brooklands.

The winning number will be drawn at random and posted on the Barbados Tourism Authority’s web site on Wednesday, April 24, with instructions on how to claim the prize – spectators will need to log on to www.visitbarbados.org to see whether their number matches, also www.rallybarbados.net to learn more about the event.

BTA Vice-President UK Petra Roach said:
“I am delighted that we were able to arrange this prize, as we hope it will encourage even more people to support such a worthwhile cause. We have worked with Southern Car Club before at Rallye Sunseeker, and we know how hard the Club’s volunteers work to stage professional, quality events.”

LRfH Rally Director Rick Smith added:
“As Petra says, we have worked together before, and I’m very happy we could carry our association forward. Bearing in mind what the weather has been like in Britain in recent weeks, I imagine most of our spectators could do with a week away in the sun, and where better than Barbados . . . especially with a big helping of rallying thrown in!”

Sol Rally Barbados is a two-day closed-road tarmac rally with around 24 stages covering 80 miles; from small beginnings in 1990, the BRC’s premier event has grown into a key player in the country’s sports-tourism product.

Since the first overseas competitors took part in the early 1990s – initially, from the UK – nearly 30 countries have been represented. But victory in 2012 for England’s Paul Bird and Scottish co-driver Kirsty Riddick was only the fifth success for an International crew since Northern Ireland’s Kenny McKinstry and Robbie Philpott won in 1993.

London Rally for Heroes counting down

Posted: April 11, 2013 1:12 PM

With an entry list of approaching 80 crews published today, next weekend's (April 19/20) inaugural London Rally for Heroes has already exceeded the organiser's expectations, and Clerk of the Course Robert Pike is delighted.

Reviewing the entries, Pike said:
"With any new event, and particularly one in the South East of England, you can never predict what the take-up will be. The fact that we have such a healthy entry list, with an interesting cross-section of cars and drivers, speaks for itself and vindicates the decision to host an event like this in the area.

"So far, the public have really taken the event to heart, and supported us in so many ways, that all of us involved in staging London Rally for Heroes are really looking forward to putting on a challenging event."

At 18.45hrs on Friday (April 19), Secretary of State for Defence and local MP Philip Hammond will flag the crews away from the Ceremonial Start at Brooklands Museum, where large crowds are expected.

Rally Headquarters opens Brooklands at 10.00hrs, with Documentation and Scrutineering during the day, an ideal opportunity for spectators to combine an interest in rallying with a tour of the exhibits and displays that form part of the beauty of Brooklands.

On Saturday, the Service Area is located at Rushmoor Arena, Aldershot, which will also host eight spectator-friendly special stages between 07.30hrs and 15.15hrs, four in each direction of the 1.7-mile course. The final two tests of the day, the 1.7-mile Environmental BioTech Brooklands stages, are also open to spectators, starting at 4.30pm, with the rally finish also at the venue.

Rally Director Rick Smith is delighted with the way that the build-up to the event has progressed over the last few weeks:
"London Rally for Heroes is going to be a super event and I can't wait; so many people have put so much effort into this, I am overwhelmed by the all-round support for all we are doing. Don't forget, too, that we hope to raise a serious amount of money for Help for Heroes, which is such a good cause: next weekend, Brooklands and the South East is going to be the place to be."

As a qualifying round of two regional championships, as well as RAF MSA and British Army MA championships, the event has attracted a strong entry. In addition to well-known local names, there are entries from as far afield at Belgium, Scotland and South Africa.

Modern four-wheel-drive cars will mix it with a host of two-wheel-drives, with historics and Armed Forces Rally Team Land Rovers thrown in for good measure. There will be something for everyone.

Race2Recovery enters London Rally for Heroes

Posted: March 26, 2013 11:42 AM

Race2Recovery, the partly-disabled team that conquered the Dakar Rally in January, is entering a Fiesta R2 for the London Rally for Heroes - which is taking place April 19/20. The rally is a fundraiser for the Help for Heroes charity, which provides practical and direct support for our current war wounded Services personnel.

It's the first time a tarmac rally has been held within 25 miles of central London, with its base at Brooklands, the site of the world's first purpose-built motor racing circuit. The stages will take place mainly on British Army-owned land, and the event is almost a sell-out, with entries close to maximum.

Now Race2Recovery, which raised money at the Dakar for Help for Heroes' centre at Tedworth House in the UK, is taking part in the charity fundraiser, with team leader Captain Tony Harris delighted to compete and help raise some more for the Help for Heroes cause:

"For those of us at Race2Recovery Help for Heroes has been a truly incredible charity supporting not only those of us who have been injured but our loved ones as well. It was thanks to Help for Heroes and the support of the public channeled through H4H that gave us the motivation and determination to succeed in completing the Dakar Rally in January 2013."

"Thanks to Race2Recovery sponsors Castrol who have joined forces with MIS Motorsport the team are thrilled to be entering the London Rally for Heroes in April with the original Dakar pairing of Tony Harris and Quin Evans in Castrol's Fiesta R2 M-Sport rally car."

"Race2Recovery has always prided itself on going beyond injury and achieving the extraordinary and this fantastic fundraising tarmac rally will provide a first hand opportunity for Race2Recovery to thank the motorsport community and raise awareness of the fantastic work done by Help for Heroes, it's volunteers and the incredible people who support our troops."

Pat Ward, managing director of AEMC Stage Rally Championship sponsors Ward Construction Ltd, said:
"I am very pleased that the London Rally will be included in this year's Ward Construction AEMC Stage Rally Championship. The championship has a good balance of established and new events and having such a prestigious event as the London Rally included in its first year is a real positive."

The addition of the AEMC and its inclusion was not lost on rally director Rick Smith, who told us:
"With the addition now of the London Rally for Heroes into the AEMC Stage Rally Championship, it proves that our event is worthy and not only gaining momentum, but acknowledgement. We are delighted to have them on board.

London Rally for Heroes on 19/20 April will become round three of the championship, which is currently led by Tony Capon in his Rover Metro.

Press Release 3

Posted: March 8, 2013 3:51 PM

The London Rally for Heroes is starting to take shape in the form of some super entries confirmed to date, with the promise of more to come. Chris Ingram has entered the event in his Renault Twingo, and the 2012 RSF MSA Driver of the Year is really looking forward to the event. The 18 year old from Cheshire said “Last year was a good year in Rallying for me, both in the British Championship and in Europe where we competed on a regular basis. I heard about the London Rally for Heroes at the BRC awards dinner and decided then, that whatever 2013 held for me, it was one event that we were definitely coming to. It’s for such a super cause, and with it being run by the same team as Rallye Sunseeker, I know it will be a brilliant event, can’t wait really.”

On top of that the good news for the London Rally is that Chris has put up for auction the chance to co-drive for him on eBay with all the money raised going to the Help for Heroes Fund.

Gary Le Coadou and Paul Hollingham are also coming to the event in their Toyota Corolla WRC, and will add spectacle to what will be a good event. Gary and Paul are no strangers to rallying here in the South East and are regularly seen out and about the events that take place in the South of England. Gary said “To be honest as soon as we heard about the event, it was certain we would be there. We are really looking forward to the Brooklands start.”

Another excellent addition to the event will be a pair of Francis Tuthill Porsche 911’s driven by regulars John Lloyd and Andrew Barnes. The Jardine Lloyd Thompson pair will be sure to delight the spectators on the stages. John has been rallying for many years, and this year is due to contest the likes of Rally North Wales, Severn Valley and the Neath Valley stages to name a few. Rick Smith Rally Director was naturally delighted with the news on the latest entries to the event and said
“It’s a real coup for the event to attract the likes of John and Andrew in the Porsches. When you look at the schedule that the JLT team has for this year, for our event to be added, is such great news.”

Smith went on to add “John has rallied all over the world, and as soon as the chance came up, that it was possible he could do the London Rally, he immediately said Yes.” London Rally for Heroes caught up with John recently and asked him about the event and he told us “What a super idea the event is, so close to London, using Brooklands Museum as Rally HQ, stages on the military roads and to top that all off, its raising money for a great cause, and one we all must support.”

Entries are still coming into the event, and plans well advanced for some excellent entertainment at Mercedes Benz world, in Surrey designed to bring fun and enjoyment for the whole family for the duration of the rally. Equally attractive too will be the central service area at Rushmoor Arena on the Saturday designed to cater for all spectators and crews alike.

On top of that, money is being raised on a regular basis for the charity with recent confirmation that over £500.00 has been raised via Bmy Charity.

London Rally for Heroes is go

Posted: February 6, 2013 3:11 PM

For the first time in many years, a major tarmac rally will return to the South East of England with the inaugural London Rally For Heroes taking place on April 19th / 20th.

The event will be run and organised by Southern Car Club, and its supportive friends in the world of motorsport, and will be based at the historic Brooklands Museum in Surrey.

As the name of the event suggests, the aim is to raise as much money as possible for Help for Heroes. Competitors and cars competing on the rally will be “sponsored” by friends and colleagues for every mile they complete on the event to generate funds for this worthy cause.

The rally, which will commence with a ceremonial start at Brooklands on the Friday, is designed to accommodate spectators and fans, allowing them to get close up to the crews and cars. The competition begins in earnest on Saturday with over 50 stage miles on military roads, in and around the Aldershot area before visiting Mercedes Benz World for two Spectator Stages in the late afternoon- the Ceremonial finish will then be back at Brooklands

Support for both the event and the idea has been overwhelming, with the Secretary of State for Defence, Philip Hammond, who is MP for Runnymede and Weybridge stating
“I am delighted that the MOD will be able to support the London Rally for Heroes in 2013. The MOD’s estate accounts for 1% of the entire landmass of the UK, and provides a perfect environment for a dynamic and exhilarating event like rally-driving. Brooklands, in my constituency, has been home to both British motor sport, and some of the great names in aviation, including Hawker, Sopwith and Vickers. Its links to both motor-sport and Defence make it a perfect starting point for what promises to be a superb event in support of Help for Heroes.”

Equally excited and supportive was Sir Gerald Howarth, MP for Aldershot who said,
“I am delighted to hear of this exciting initiative,” said Sir Gerald. “Aldershot is becoming synonymous with military motorsport and this event would be a great one for the spring calendar as well as a chance to raise money for an excellent cause.”

LONDON RALLY WILL START AT BROOKLANDS

Posted: January 13, 2013 1:50 PM

Brooklands – the birthplace of British motorsport – will host the start of a brand new motor sport event, the London Rally 4 Heroes on April 19. Bringing a tarmac stage rally to the London area for the first time in two decades, the London Rally will showcase Britain’s best rally cars and drivers close to the capital.

The MOD has opened the gates of 60 miles of private military roads to create this rally. There will be spectator stages where families can get close-up views of the cars in action. 100 entries are expected for this unique event that will generate funds for the Help 4 Heroes charity that aids rehabilitation of wounded soldiers. For every mile covered by every car on the London Rally more money will be donated.

The London Rally is being organised by the experienced Southern Car Club in association with other motor clubs in the region. The aim is to grow the event to National Championship status in three years and double the stage mileage to 120 miles. Stages in Windsor Great Park and North Hampshire could be added in 2014.

“Our ambition is to establish the London Rally in 2013 and keep it growing to get top class recognition. As a thank you to the MOD for making these new roads available for our rally competitors we are proud to contribute to the charity that helps our military heroes. I want all of our crews to secure additional sponsorship from their friends and business colleagues so that we can make a valuable donation to Help 4 Heroes,” says Rick Smith, Rally Director.

“Brooklands Museum is delighted to be the start venue for this brand new motor sport event. We gave birth to the sport in Britain and are delighted to nurture this new young event which will grow into a prestige event to add to our long history of sporting success,” says Allan Winn Director of the popular Brooklands Museum. “It will be exciting to have top class rally teams here and this will bring a new group of spectators to the Museum which will spread awareness of the magnificent displays on show here all year round.”

Secretary of State for Defence, Philip Hammond MP says:
“I am delighted that the MOD will be able to support the London Rally 4 Heroes in 2013.
